SUMMARY:Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This day the service begins with an Ecumenical Procession starting with the Liturgy of the Palms at San Lorenzo in Panisperna. We gather at 09.45 (Via S. Lorenzo in Panisperna 90) and process with our brothers and sisters from S. Vitale up via Nazionale to St. Paul’s. \nToday the Palm Sunday Gospel is read in which we hear about Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.\nThe people cry Hosanna (an exclamation or shout of praise to God) and spread Palms and garments in the path of Jesus. We process into the church with Palms and olive branches in joy and excitement. \nAt the Eucharist the mood changes and focuses on the Passion of Christ. The somber nature is reflected\nin the Passion Gospel. We are all part of this great drama. The truth of this day is that we are all responsible through our sins for the Passion and Death of our Lord. The glory of the day is that we know by faith the truth of the Resurrection and the promise of everlasting life “with him who suffered and died for us\, and rose again”.

SUMMARY:Tenebrae
DESCRIPTION:This ancient service was used throughout the Catholic monastic world for many\, many centuries during Holy Week. Consisting almost entirely of Scriptural readings\, it is a meditation on the sorrows\, the profundity and the hopes involved in the Passion of Christ. It is in this way that we too\, in a shortened form of the original service\, have decided to use it. \nThe Antiphons (fragments of the readings meant to pinpoint an aspect of its spiritual message) and the psalms are read by all\, while the Officiant and the Cantors read or sing certain passages as the candles are gradually put out until total darkness prevails; after which a dramatic reminder of the Resurrection is given. \nThere are no scheduled readers for this service; we invite you to join in as fully as possible\, and to read and come forward to extinguish candles as you feel the spirit move. \n

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday\, three days before Easter\, is when we celebrate the Institution of the Eucharist (the Last Supper) and the washing of feet as a sign of humility. The word ‘Maundy’ comes from the Latin ‘mandatum novum’\, (new commandment) from John 13:34. \nAt the end of the service the altar is stripped and all decorative furnishings are removed from the church. The church will remain open for prayer until 10pm. \nJoin us at 7pm: all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Good Friday Liturgy
DESCRIPTION:At the Good Friday Liturgy we come together to hear Saint John’s record of the Passion. We pray for the church and for the world in the Solemn Collects. We contemplate the mysteries of the cross\, and are invited to approach the foot of the Cross in Adoration. The Holy Eucharist is not celebrated today. \nWe maintain silence as we come and go.  Jesus has been crucified and is brought to the tomb.

SUMMARY:A Shining
DESCRIPTION:A man starts driving without knowing where he is going. He alternates between turning right and left\, and finally he gets stuck at the end of a forest road. Soon it gets dark and starts to snow\, but instead of going back to find help\, he ventures\, foolishly\, into the dark forest. Inevitably\, the man gets lost\, and as he grows cold and tired\, he encounters a glowing being amid the obscurity. Strange\, haunting and dreamlike\, A Shining is the latest work of fiction by Jon Fosse\, ‘the Beckett of the twenty-first century’ (Le Monde). (Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:The Great Divide
DESCRIPTION:An epic novel of the construction of the Panama Canal\, casting light on the unsung people who lived\, loved\, and labored there. \nIt is said that the canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first\, it must be built. For Francisco\, a local fisherman who resents the foreign powers clamoring for a slice of his country\, nothing is more upsetting than the decision of his son\, Omar\, to work as a digger in the excavation zone. But for Omar\, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely\, this job offers a chance to finally find connection. \nAda Bunting is a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados who arrives in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work. Alone and with no resources\, she is determined to find a job that will earn enough money for her ailing sister’s surgery. When she sees a young man—Omar—who has collapsed after a grueling shift\, she is the only one who rushes to his aid. \nJohn Oswald has dedicated his life to scientific research and has journeyed to Panama in single-minded pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But now\, his wife\, Marian\, has fallen ill herself\, and when he witnesses Ada’s bravery and compassion\, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition\, loyalty\, and sacrifice. \nSearing and empathetic\, The Great Divide explores the intersecting lives of activists\, fishmongers\, laborers\, journalists\, neighbors\, doctors\, and soothsayers—those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.(Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:James
DESCRIPTION:A brilliant\, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn \, both harrowing and ferociously funny\, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. \nWhen the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans\, separated from his wife and daughter forever\, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile\, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father\, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know\, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. \nWhile many narrative set pieces of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place (floods and storms\, stumbling across both unexpected death and unexpected treasure in the myriad stopping points along the river’s banks\, encountering the scam artists posing as the Duke and Dauphin…)\, Jim’s agency\, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light. SUMMARY:Lady Tan’s Circle of Women
DESCRIPTION:According to Confucius\, “an educated woman is a worthless woman\,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family\, yet haunted by death\, separations\, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China\, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine\, the Four Examinations—looking\, listening\, touching\, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient. \nFrom a young age\, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses\, many of which relate to childbearing\, alongside a young midwife-in-training\, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends\, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud\, no lotus \, they tell from adversity beauty can bloom. \nBut when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage\, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers\, recite poetry\, give birth to sons\, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound\, the Garden of Fragrant Delights. \nHow might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? A captivating story of women helping each other\, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a triumphant reimagining of the life of one person who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.  (Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:Kairos
DESCRIPTION:Berlin. 11 July 1986. They meet by chance on a bus. She is a young student\, he is older and married. Theirs is an intense and sudden attraction\, fuelled by a shared passion for music and art\, and heightened by the secrecy they must maintain. But when she strays for a single night he cannot forgive her and a dangerous crack forms between them\, opening up a space for cruelty\, punishment and the exertion of power. And the world around them is changing as the GDR begins to crumble\, so too do all the old certainties and the old loyalties\, ushering in a new era whose great gains also involve profound loss. \nFrom a prize-winning German writer\, this is the intimate and devastating story of the path of two lovers through the ruins of a relationship\, set against the backdrop of a seismic period in European history.
