SUMMARY:The Hunchback of Notre Dame
DESCRIPTION:Come and join friends around the world as we meet online for the monthly St. Paul’s Book Club! For February\, to celebrate the re-opening of Notre Dame to the public\,  we are reading Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. \nThis extraordinary historical French gothic novel\, set in Medieval Paris under the twin towers of its greatest structure and supreme symbol\, the cathedral of Notre-Dame\, is the haunting drama of Quasimodo\, the disabled bell-ringer of Notre-Dame\, as he struggles to stand up to his ableist guardian Claude Frollo\, who also wants to commit genocide against Paris’ Romani population. \nThe novel has been described as a key text in French literature and has been adapted for film over a dozen times\, in addition to numerous television and stage adaptations\, such as a 1923 silent film with Lon Chaney\, a 1939 sound film with Charles Laughton\, and a 1996 Disney animated film with Tom Hulce (both as Quasimodo). \nThe novel sought to preserve values of French culture in a time period of great change\, which resulted in the destruction of many French Gothic structures. The novel made Notre-Dame de Paris a national icon and served as a catalyst for renewed interest in the restoration of Gothic form. (Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:My Friends
DESCRIPTION:Come and join friends around the world as we meet online for the monthly St. Paul’s Book Club! In March we are reading My Friends by Hisham Matar. \nOne evening\, as a young boy growing up in Benghazi\, Khaled hears a bizarre short story read aloud on the radio\, about a man being eaten alive by a cat\, and has the sense that his life has been changed forever. Obsessed by the power of those words—and by their enigmatic author\, Hosam Zowa—Khaled eventually embarks on a journey that will take him far from home\, to pursue a life of the mind at the University of Edinburgh. \nThere\, thrust into an open society that is miles away from the world he knew in Libya\, Khaled begins to change. He attends a protest against the Qaddafi regime in London\, only to watch it explode into tragedy. In a flash\, Khaled finds himself injured\, clinging to life\, unable to leave Britain\, much less return to the country of his birth. To even tell his mother and father back home what he has done\, on tapped phone lines\, would expose them to danger. \nWhen a chance encounter in a hotel brings Khaled face-to-face with Hosam Zowa\, the author of the fateful short story\, he is subsumed into the deepest friendship of his life. It is a friendship that not only sustains him but eventually forces him\, as the Arab Spring erupts\, to confront agonizing tensions between revolution and safety\, family and exile\, and how to define his own sense of self against those closest to him. \nA devastating meditation on friendship and family\, and the ways in which time tests—and frays—those bonds\, My Friends is an achingly beautiful work of literature by an author working at the peak of his powers. (Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This day the service begins with an Ecumenical Procession starting with the Liturgy of the Palms at San Lorenzo in Panisperna. We gather at 09.45 (Via S. Lorenzo in Panisperna 90) and process with our brothers and sisters from S. Vitale up via Nazionale to St. Paul’s. \nToday the Palm Sunday Gospel is read in which we hear about Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.\nThe people cry Hosanna (an exclamation or shout of praise to God) and spread Palms and garments in the path of Jesus. We process into the church with Palms and olive branches in joy and excitement. \nAt the Eucharist the mood changes and focuses on the Passion of Christ. The somber nature is reflected\nin the Passion Gospel. We are all part of this great drama. The truth of this day is that we are all responsible through our sins for the Passion and Death of our Lord. The glory of the day is that we know by faith the truth of the Resurrection and the promise of everlasting life “with him who suffered and died for us\, and rose again”.

SUMMARY:Tenebrae
DESCRIPTION:This ancient service was used throughout the Catholic monastic world for many\, many centuries during Holy Week. Consisting almost entirely of Scriptural readings\, it is a meditation on the sorrows\, the profundity and the hopes involved in the Passion of Christ. It is in this way that we too\, in a shortened form of the original service\, have decided to use it. \nThe Antiphons (fragments of the readings meant to pinpoint an aspect of its spiritual message) and the psalms are read by all\, while the Officiant and the Cantors read or sing certain passages as the candles are gradually put out until total darkness prevails; after which a dramatic reminder of the Resurrection is given. \nThere are no scheduled readers for this service; we invite you to join in as fully as possible\, and to read and come forward to extinguish candles as you feel the spirit move. \n

The church will remain open for prayer until 10pm. \nJoin us at 7pm: all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Good Friday Liturgy
DESCRIPTION:At the Good Friday Liturgy we come together to hear Saint John’s record of the Passion. We pray for the church and for the world in the Solemn Collects. We contemplate the mysteries of the cross\, and are invited to approach the foot of the Cross in Adoration. The Holy Eucharist is not celebrated today. \nWe maintain silence as we come and go.  Jesus has been crucified and is brought to the tomb.

SUMMARY:A Shining
DESCRIPTION:A man starts driving without knowing where he is going. He alternates between turning right and left\, and finally he gets stuck at the end of a forest road. Soon it gets dark and starts to snow\, but instead of going back to find help\, he ventures\, foolishly\, into the dark forest. SUMMARY:The Great Divide
DESCRIPTION:An epic novel of the construction of the Panama Canal\, casting light on the unsung people who lived\, loved\, and labored there. \nIt is said that the canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first\, it must be built. For Francisco\, a local fisherman who resents the foreign powers clamoring for a slice of his country\, nothing is more upsetting than the decision of his son\, Omar\, to work as a digger in the excavation zone. But for Omar\, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely\, this job offers a chance to finally find connection. \nAda Bunting is a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados who arrives in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work. Alone and with no resources\, she is determined to find a job that will earn enough money for her ailing sister’s surgery. When she sees a young man—Omar—who has collapsed after a grueling shift\, she is the only one who rushes to his aid. \nJohn Oswald has dedicated his life to scientific research and has journeyed to Panama in single-minded pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But now\, his wife\, Marian\, has fallen ill herself\, and when he witnesses Ada’s bravery and compassion\, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition\, loyalty\, and sacrifice. \nSearing and empathetic\, The Great Divide explores the intersecting lives of activists\, fishmongers\, laborers\, journalists\, neighbors\, doctors\, and soothsayers—those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.(Goodreads) \nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:James
DESCRIPTION:A brilliant\, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn \, both harrowing and ferociously funny\, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. \nWhen the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans\, separated from his wife and daughter forever\, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile\, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father\, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know\, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. \nWhile many narrative set pieces of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn remain in place (floods and storms\, stumbling across both unexpected death and unexpected treasure in the myriad stopping points along the river’s banks\, encountering the scam artists posing as the Duke and Dauphin…)\, Jim’s agency\, intelligence and compassion are shown in a radically new light.
