DESCRIPTION:Stefano Vasselli\, Organ \nJohann Sebastian Bach\nToccata\, Adagio and Fugue in C Major BWV 564\nChorale – Partita “Sei gegrüßet\, Jesu gütig” BWV 768\nPièce d’orgue BWV 575\nPassacaglia and Thema Fugatum BWV 582 \nA program entirely dedicated to a single composer always poses particular difficulties\, however\, the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach\, and the very variety of his compositions easily supports a monographic concert. The choice fell on four pieces written in different eras\, the result of the evolution of Bach’s thought which\, with its unmistakable personality\, was able to make the stylistic influences of other musical schools its own. The program opens with the Toccata\, Adagio and Fugue in C Major\, a tripartite piece in the manner of the instrumental concert. The toccata opens with large virtuosic cadences for both the manual and the pedal\, and then gives way to an elegant and light-filled contrapuntal writing. The Toccata is followed by an Adagio in A minor\, the cantability of which immediately brings to mind the Italian style of Vivaldi and Corelli. After a polyphonic passage with rich and sonorous harmonies\, the fugue begins\, based on a theme in 6/8 with a dancing and joyful character and developed lightly\, without resorting to overly erudite contrapuntal devices. The 11 Partitas (= variations) on the chorale “Sei gegrüßet\, Jesu gütig”\, were probably written in 1706 in Lüneburg\, by a Johann Sebastian in his early twenties. Although simple in structure\, they show a depth of expression that is already mature and full of nuances\, further underlined by the refined timbral research that differentiates each variation. The “pièce d’orgue” as the title says\, is a particular piece\, of French taste\, that the young Bach (about twenty-five years old) wrote during his years of training and exploration of the musical taste of his contemporaries. A short toccata page (très vitement) and an equally short chromatic coda (lentement) frame a grandiose “tutti” (gravement) of the organ\, solemn and majestic\, in the French manner of the “grand plein jeux” of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Finally\, the Passacaglia is one of those pieces that Bach seems to have written more for himself than for some contingent occasion: the composition is generally dated between 1706 and 1713\, and its first instrumental destination is the harpsichord with pedal. It is a series of 21 variations on a solemn dance theme in 3/4 time. The variations seem to arise from each other more as a continuous development rather than a play of writing or timbres. At the end of the variations\, a grandiose double fugue further elaborates the material until the piece concludes with understated grandeur. Over the centuries\, the passacaglia has found its performance space on the organ\, sometimes enduring excessive timbral or interpretative elaborations\, due\, in any case\, to the extreme richness of musical and\, we could say\, spiritual contents\, contents to which no subsequent composer is could have remained insensitive. DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday 16 April at 16:00 for a performance by an outstanding youth band from the USA. \nDirected by Sean C Noah\, the McGill-Toolen High School Band is one of Alabama’s oldest musical organisations\, established in 1896. The band performs at football games\, marching festivals\, school pep rallies\, assemblies\, Mass\, parades\, and concert festivals\, and performs several concerts throughout the school year. The band includes a Concert Band\, Jazz Ensemble\, Percussion Ensemble\, Color Guard\, and Winter Guard. The band performs locally in Alabama and has performed in Mexico\, Italy\, Chicago\, and Ireland. In 2016\, the McGill–Toolen Catholic High School Band travelled to New York City and made their Carnegie Hall premier. \nThe McGill-Toolen Catholica High School Band will give a unique performance at the Chiesa di San Paolo entre le mura on Tuesday 16 April at 16:00. The band will be performing works by Shostakovich\, Sousa\, Grainger and many others. An event not to be missed!

The choir maintains a rigorous performance schedule\, giving multiple concerts locally\, regionally\, nationally\, and internationally. Most recent activities include the 2023 World Premiere of Michael Trotta’s Requiem\, invitational performances for the 2023 AMEA In-Service Conference\, and the 2020 ACDA Southern Region Conference. Additional performances include the 2018 Gotham Sings Performance Series in Carnegie Hall\, the 2017 Cante Rode and London Sangerstevne Choral Festivals in The Netherlands and England\, the 2020\, 2016\, and 2012 AMEA In-Service Conferences\, and the 2014 Interkultur 8th World Choir Games in Riga\, Latvia\, where the choir won gold and silver medals in three categories (Youth Mixed\, Musica sacra with accompaniment\, and Spiritual). The choir’s 2012 CD project\, “Unceasing Love\,” is available at digital outlets including iTunes and Amazon\, and via the department’s online store. Additional activities include world premiere performances by prominent choral composers such as Glenn McClure\, Michael Trotta\, Richard Burchard\, K. Lee Scott\, and Stacey V. Gibbs. The choir has built a strong reputation of choral excellence\, and has performed at past conferences of the American Choral Directors Association\, and in international choral competitions\, including the Fleischman International Trophy Competition in Cork\, Ireland and the 34th annual Florilege Vocal de Tours in Tours\, France. Performing activities have also included invitational concerts throughout the United States and Europe\, and regular performances of masterworks with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The choir is selected by audition\, and is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from across the university\, including music majors and non-music majors. \n\nBrian Kittredge Short Bio \nDr. Brian Kittredge is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Under his direction\, the UAB Choirs have gained a strong presence regionally\, nationally\, and internationally. Dr. Kittredge has led the UAB Concert Choir in performances at the 2023\, 2020\, 2016\, and 2012 Alabama Music Educators Conferences\, the 2020 ACDA Southern Region Conference\, the 2018 Gotham Sings Choral Festival in Carnegie Hall\, the 2017 London Sangerstevne and Cante Rode International Choral Festivals in England and The Netherlands\, and the 2014 Interkultur 8th World Choir Games in Riga\, Latvia. DESCRIPTION:St John’s School Leatherhead\nChoir\, Schola Cantorum and Chamber Ensemble \nSt John’s School Leatherhead was founded in 1851 and the school’s sacred choral tradition underlies its foundation\, having been established to educate the children of poor clergy. Today the school offers an excellent range of artistic disciplines to a student body of over 850 children. \nThe St John’s School Leatherhead Choir is the school’s largest choral group. The school choir sings a wide variety of repertoire ranging from sacred choral works to ABBA songs. The choir has performed at venues including London’s Cadogan Hall\, G-Live and the Leatherhead Theatre. \nThe Schola Cantorum is the school’s chamber choir and has achieved success in national choral competitions.
